1. Basic Training: This is the initial phase of military training that all enlistees must complete. Basic training teaches recruits the basic skills necessary to be a Soldier, including marksmanship, physical fitness, and military customs and courtesies.
2. Advanced Individual Training (AIT): After completing basic training, Soldiers attend AIT to learn the specific skills they need for their military occupational specialty (MOS). AIT programs can last anywhere from a few weeks to several months.
3. Skill Identification Course (SIC): SICs are additional courses that provide Soldiers with more in-depth training in their MOS. SICs can last anywhere from a few weeks to several months.
4. Professional Military Education (PME): PME courses are designed to develop the leadership, critical thinking, and decision-making skills of Officers and NCOs. PME courses can last anywhere from a few days to several months.
