Great Dr. Seuss Art Ideas

Theodor Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss, created some of the most memorable characters in his children's books including "The Cat in the Hat" and "Horton Hears a Who." Art projects can be created using many of his most famous books. Many schools celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday each March, making this a great time to share his stories and make class art projects.
  1. Cat in the Hat

    • Make the hat from the "Cat in the Hat" for students to wear. The cat wears a red and white striped hat. Use a round paper plate to create the brim. Cut a hole in the center of the plate and create a ridge for the strips to connect to by cutting small slits in the center which can be then folded upwards. Have the students cut and glue alternating strips of paper and then glue them together. Once dried, make the striped paper into a tube shape by gluing or stapling the ends together and attach to the brim with staples.

    Foot Day

    • The "Foot Book" is a book focused on the foot. Provide the children with construction paper to take home and have them trace the feet of all their family members, including any pets. The student then will cut out the traced feet at school, color and make designs inside the foot and then create a family tree book using the feet of their family. The largest feet make the front and back covers of the book.

    Green Eggs and Ham

    • Each student will create a plate full of green eggs and ham from Dr. Seuss' story "Green Eggs and Ham." Provide each student with a white paper plate they can design. The eggs and ham can be made out of many different materials including construction paper and papier-mache. The students then attach their eggs and ham to the plate for a Seuss breakfast special.

    Birthday Cards

    • Dr. Seuss' birthday is in March. Have the students create birthday cards for Dr. Seuss to celebrate his special day. Using construction paper have the students make the card into the shape of their favorite Dr. Seuss character. The students can trace these images onto the paper before cutting them out. The students will then color and design the rest of the card. Inside the card, the student should write Dr. Seuss a message about their favorite book and why they enjoy it so much.
