Determine what three categories you want to grade your students on. For example, choose to grade them on assessments, participation and final exams. Assessments often include quizzes, tests and performance exams, while participation includes teamwork and sportsmanship.
Assess fourth- and fifth-grade students on basic knowledge they learned during the course, for example, whether they can accurately perform basic exercises like a sit-up or push-up, know how to play well within a team, and understand what clothing is appropriate for sports activities. Students should also have an understanding about how a healthy diet supports an active lifestyle.
Determine the student's level of participation. At the fourth- and fifth-grade levels, students should actively understand and follow rules, contribute to a team atmosphere in whatever capacity possible, and participate readily in new activities.
Hold a final exam that asks students to reflect upon what they have learned. Questions could include, "Why is good teamwork important?" "What does being a good sport mean to you?" and "Why is wearing sunscreen while playing outside sports important?"
Assign percentages to each of the three categories. For example, if you think that assessments are most important, make that category 50 to 75 percent of your students' grades. Designate 10 to 25 percent for participation and up to 20 percent for a final exam.
Locate all doctor's notes and excused absences so that they are not counted against absentee students, and consider them while calculating participation grades.
Calculate each student's grades with your calculator by adding up the percentages of the three graded areas. Determine whether these grades are an accurate reflection of the work that each student has done. Consider offering extra credit to those students who qualify for it; award points for extra work, including for performance or overtime efforts, as well as for attending sports games or reading sports-related material. An example of an extra credit assignment could include designing a healthy nutrition schedule based on the food pyramid or outlining an exercise schedule for the week.
