Valentine's Day can be a perfect opportunity to not only celebrate the holiday, but to also teach the class about poetry. Start by reading the class several examples of love poems. Allow the students to attempt to interpret the poem's meaning on their own, giving them a better understanding of the factors that go into creating a poem. Tell the class to choose a person they love (parent, sibling or friend) and write a love poem about that person.
Tell the students to write down the names of 15 to 20 people whom they love. Beside each person's name, the student should write a brief explanation of why she loves that particular individual. The student should then choose one person off the list and write a brief essay explaining, in detail, why she loves that person.
Creating valentines can be an entertaining exercise that allows students to incorporate both crafts and writing. Gather craft items, such as construction paper, glue, glitter, markers and crayons, and allow each student to design valentines for his friends or family. Ask the students to write a message on the valentines to the recipients. The message can be in the form of a letter or poem.
Tell the students to choose one person whom they love, whether it be a mom, dad, sister, brother, cousin, grandparent or friend, and write that person a love letter. This gives the students an opportunity to work on their writing skills, as well as a chance to express their feelings to the chosen loved ones. Give the students the option of decorating the letter with markers and glitter, if they choose.
