Ideas to Fill in Stockings for Classroom Kids

During the Christmas season, children hang stockings above their fireplace in hope of receiving gifts from Santa Claus. According to The History of Christmas.com, this tradition originated from a tale of a poor family who happened to hang their stockings to dry on the same night St. Nick visited their home. He decided to leave a bit of gold in each stocking, and thus began the annual tradition. You can create stockings to hang in your classroom and fill them with a variety of items for kids.
  1. School Supplies

    • Buy school supplies and stuff each student's stocking with a variety of needed items. Gather two or three pencils in a group and tie them together using a green or red ribbon. Also include items such as markers, crayons or watercolors. Personalize each stocking by adding a handwritten note to each student telling him how his unique qualities contribute to the rest of the class.

    Framed Class Photograph

    • Buy a plastic photo frame, small enough to fit inside the opening of your stocking. Or, if you prefer, make your own frame using twigs or craft foam. Select your favorite photograph of the entire class and use a photo editing program to resize the picture to fit inside the frame. Print it out and place it inside the frame. Write your room number and the year on the back of the frame.

    Baked Goods and Candy

    • Fill each student's stocking with a variety of baked goods and candy. Create your own baked items, such as cookies or brownies, decorated to celebrate the holidays. Ice the cookies or brownies in red or green icing and write the room number of your class using piping gel on the treats. Add store-bought candy to the stocking to fill it up. Be aware of any allergies any of your students may have, and avoid certain food items based on any such allergies.

    Gift Certificates

    • Create homemade gift certificates for each student. Use your computer to create a template or make your own using constructing paper and markers. Cut each certificate into a simple rectangle or a holiday shape such as a Christmas tree or Santa hat. Create certificates that allow a student extra time at recess or breaks from classroom work that he can use for the remainder of the year.
