Ways to Present Textbook Chapters to a Class

Educators must be able to impart specific knowledge to their students and textbooks are an important part of that process. Educators should be able to present textbook chapters to their students in ways that the children can understand. It is also important for children to learn to use textbooks on their own, gleaning information from the chapters in quick and efficient ways.
  1. Doc Cam

    • Teachers can use technology to present chapters of any textbook to their students. Some classrooms are equipped with document cameras, or doc cams for short. These cameras are installed in the ceiling of classrooms and are hooked up to projectors. Using doc cams, educators can place any book onto a desk below the camera and it will show up in real time on the projector screen.

    Projector

    • If the classroom does not have a doc cam installed, the teacher may consider presenting the textbook material using a projector. Projector slides of the textbook ages should be placed on the projector or electronic versions of the textbook can be put into a powerpoint slide and projected on the large screen. This way, teachers can underline, point to or highlight parts of the chapters while their students follow along in their own books at their desks.

    Glossary and Index Activities

    • Teachers can present textbook chapters by first showing students how to locate information in the glossaries or indexes. These parts of books, though they are usually tucked away near the end, are very useful when trying to maneuver through new chapters. Educators can teach kids what these parts of books are and how to use them, and, by looking up information in chapters, can present those chapters to their classes simultaneously.

    Outline and Structure Activities

    • Teachers can present chapters to their students by first teaching their classes about the outlines and structures that make up the chapters in question. Children will learn that a lot of valuable information can come from reading bold headings and highlighted or italicized words. Students can practice by telling teachers all that they can glean from chapters by simply reading and thinking about title heads and bold words.
