Team Building Activities: Physical Challenges

Team building activities that are physically challenging help teammates develop improved motor skills and interpersonal skills, according to the book, "Team Building Through Physical Challenges." These physical challenges help participants improve their ability to be effective leaders, have good listening skills, understand the importance of leadership and teamwork, and embrace their differences and strengths. Team-building activities that require physical participation also promote good health.
  1. Ropes Course

    • Taking on a ropes course challenge, which typically includes both high- and low-ropes activities, enhances problem-solving and team-building skills for adults and children. Ropes courses are led by a highly trained and certified instructor, according to the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, and no one should create a course or attempt to take on a ropes course challenge without an expert. Ropes courses can be found nationwide. To find one in your area, call your local recreation department or an adventure store. Although each course is different, the challenge helps teams of all abilities build skills including self-confidence, trust, leadership and communication.

    Adventure Racing

    • Adventure racing helps build teamwork among participants, and simply competing in the race is considered an accomplishment by many, according to the U.S. Adventure Racing Association. Adventure races could include hiking through a forest, followed by canoeing down rapids, and finishing with mountain biking over a mountain. These races take practice and hard work among the two to four teammates to succeed. Teams must communicate and work together to cross the finish line first. Adventure races could last up to several days, depending on the type and level of the race.

    Scavenger Hunt

    • Scavenger hunts can focus around a specific theme or location, and they also can be designed to involve sports or a physical challenge. Hosting a scavenger hunt in a forest or state park with trails are suitable locations for teams to run and search for items on the scavenger list. For example, asking teams to find three Maple leaves, a bench alongside a specific trail and a certain trail blaze would be ideal. Adding a time limit to find all items would add an element of excitement among teammates. This activity helps teams work together, communicate effectively and build their relationships.

    Bridge Over Water

    • Bridge Over Water is a quick team-building game for children and adults that requires only a few supplies and a lot of teamwork. To play, all team members must travel from one end of an open area, such as a gymnasium or parking lot, to the other side. Team members must cross this space without touching the floor. A team must only use four car tires, two jump ropes and two narrow 8-foot-long boards. This takes strategy and physical energy to successfully complete the challenge. When a team member touches the floor, the entire team must start from the beginning.
