6th Grade Peter and the Wolf Activities

"Peter and the Wolf" is a classic story written in 1936 by Sergei Prokofiev for the purpose of introducing orchestra instruments and sounds to children. The work is often used in classrooms to cover essential literary concepts. Students will enjoy this tale about a young boy who sets out to capture a wolf.
  1. Foreshadowing Techniques

    • Educators enjoy using the story of "Peter and the Wolf" to teach students about various foreshadowing techniques. Throughout the story, the author gives the reader several clues about upcoming events. The teacher could read the beginning of the story and then ask students to write down their predictions of what will happen next. Because the story is older, many students have not heard the tale and will be able to use foreshadowing techniques without an unfair advantage of having heard the story.

    Climax Graph

    • Students could use the story of "Peter and the Wolf" to create a climax graph. The educator should read a different short story and create a climax graph in front of the students, asking for help from the class. After the vocabulary words have been reviewed and students have heard "Peter and the Wolf," students should create their own graphs, plotting the exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution. Students should share their graphs in front of the class when they have finished, while the teacher discusses their work.

    Act it Out

    • Students will enjoy having the spotlight for this activity which requires them to act out the story in front of their peers. Divide the class into groups of four or five students. Explain to students that they should create a script, make costumes and practice their play. When students have had plenty of time to practice, ask them to show their skit to the rest of the class. Students enjoy this activity and will be motivated to develop a deeper understanding of "Peter and the Wolf" in order to create a better play.

    Music Connection

    • Help students understand the large role that music played in the creation of this story. Discuss the author of this story and why he decided to write it. Play the music for students. Ask the students to close their eyes as they listen to the music. Students could discuss the various instruments that they heard. If possible, present some of the instruments in class or ask a musician to play one of them for the class. Students enjoy learning about the connection between music and literature.
