Reading and Comprehension Games for 2nd Graders

For elementary school teachers, educating students in the areas of reading and comprehension can present a real challenge, and yet the mastery of such skills can be a path to improving students' confidence and overall learning trajectory. One of the ways to help develop reading and comprehension skills is to incorporate classroom games.
  1. Choral Reading

    • Reading aloud with the class is known as choral reading. This can be a good way to encourage less advanced readers and gives all students a chance to practice pronunciation, fluency and vocal intonation. Some texts for this activity include poetry, passages with repeated phrases, songs, and community oriented statements or mantras. For variation, divide the class into groups and assign to each a part of a text (antiphonal); use a play and assign parts as dialogue; or have the number of students reading build gradually (cumulative).

    Mental Images

    • Choose a text that contains vivid imagery, such as one describing scenes in nature or action. Invite the children to listen closely and form mental images of what they see as the text is read. Ask them to describe the images in as much detail as possible, and then draw pictures of the images, captioned by a significant quote from the text.

    Syllable Clapping

    • Phonemic awareness is active knowledge of the sound structure of words along with the capacity to form words out of sounds. One game which can improve this ability is syllable clapping. Invite your students to suggest different words they know or even objects they see in the classroom. Then have them clap the number of syllables in each word. Practice emphasizing word stresses and building multi-syllabic words from mono-syllabic words.

    Event Sequencing

    • Take a simple story, print it in a large font, and cut it into sections. Divide the class into groups and assign each group a section. Call on the groups to read their section. Encourage the groups to use clues within the story to help put the events together in the correct order, then read the complete story once the class votes on the proper order.
