Students of any age can write their own book given guidelines for the type of book. They can write an autobiography including hand-drawn pictures or photos, a biography about someone they know, or an educational book about a topic they enjoy. Students can also write a book of poetry. Explore resources for having the books published, such as Student Publishing and Studenttreasures.
Gifted students can use creative ways to present a book they have read to the class. They can create advertisements to present the book as if it were a movie by creating movie posters and a trailer. Students can present the book as if the story's events were happening today by filming a news report or creating newspaper articles. If the book involved a relationship between two characters, the students can write a series of letters back and forth between the characters.
Project Gutenburg is a producer of free ebooks. The company allows the opportunity for volunteers to proofread the books before they are published. Students can sign up on the Project Gutenburg website and are then provided with information and proofreading instructions. They review one page at a time and are not committed to a certain number of pages.
Have students read several books by a specific author. After reading the books, they will write a bio for that author. Have them research the author, including the his website and any interviews or articles written about him. If possible, a student can contact the author and conduct his own interview.
