The classic game of "Red Light, Green Light" fits the transportation theme well while keeping the kids active. One child stands at the far end of the gym with his back to other students. The rest of the class lines up at the opposite end of the gym in a row. The individual student calls out, "green light!" which lets the other students know they should run toward him. He then shouts, "red light!" and turns quickly so he is able to see the other players. The other players must stop immediately. If anyone is caught still moving, he has to go back to the start. The student continues calling out, "red light!" or "green light!" while keeping his back to the class on green and turning around on red. The first person who taps the child calling out the colors wins.
This version of tag requires the kids to work in groups of three to five kids. Each team of preschoolers stands in a line holding onto the waists of the children in front of them to create small trains. One or two children play individually. These individual players try to grab onto the back of one of the trains, which are trying to avoid the individuals. When a player grabs onto the end of a train, the first person in the train breaks away and becomes the new individual player.
Gym scooters serve as the vehicles for this game. Set up a pretend city in the gym or on the playground. Use sidewalk chalk outdoors, or tape indoors, to create roads for the city. The kids "drive" the scooters around the mini city to practice being vehicles. Make cardboard road signs to teach kids the basics of the road.
For a simple gym game, let the kids pretend they are different vehicles. Call out a vehicle name, such as airplane, car or boat. The kids move around the gym acting like that vehicle. For airplanes, they might hold their arms out to the side as wings. For boats, encourage the kids to pretend they are rowing in a boat. Call out a different vehicle name every one to two minutes.
