Students who enjoy school and have a sense of motivation for being there will be more likely to come to school. If a student is motivated to learn, he will be less likely to beg his parents to stay home for a minor problem, such as a cough. Students will not want to be away from school if they are highly motivated.
One of the most important effects of motivating students is the use of a positive classroom behavior system. The educator will spend most of his energy pointing out the positive behaviors, rather than negative behavior. For example, if many of the students are not paying attention, the educator could say, "I really like the way Susan is sitting with her eyes on me and her mouth closed." The other students immediately imitate Susan in order to gain the positive attention of their peers and teacher. When a teacher incorporates a positive behavior system, the students are motivated to follow it.
Educators can use various rewards to encourage students to work diligently on assignments until they reach completion. A great multitude of rewards can be given according to the needs of the class. For example, a teacher could offer extra recess if every student writes neatly. Another idea is to add a marble to a jar every time the class brings in their homework assignments. When the jar is full, the children could be rewarded with a party.
Motivation is extremely important for both the teacher and the students. When students are well-behaved and motivated to learn, the teacher is able to spend more time instructing the students. The hours gained from the use of motivation will allow students to advance in the curriculum. The standardized test scores should go up when students spend more time learning.
