What does it mean if a school offers open enrollment?

Open enrollment means that a school district or school accepts students from outside its designated boundaries. Instead of only accepting students who live within a specific geographic area (their attendance zone), they allow students from anywhere within the district (or sometimes even from other districts) to apply and enroll, often on a first-come, first-served or lottery basis. There may be restrictions, such as capacity limits.
