Fused Glass Lesson Plan Ideas for the Art Classroom

Fusing glass is a fascinating art form, allowing artists to create beautiful objects with the use of glass and the help of a kiln. It is an art that requires patience, dedication and technique. The art classroom is the most suitable place to teach this interesting craft and knowing how to introduce and educate it to your students is important.
  1. Jewelry Lesson

    • This lesson involves the creation of fused glass jewelry. Students should cut the glass available at assigned cutting stations and break it with the use of pliers. After students have cut and broken their glass, ask them to design shapes, using the pieces of glass, arranging them and stacking them how they wish. Stabilize the designs with the use of glue between each layer. Provide each student with a length of wire and ask them to create a loop. Place the loop in between two pieces of glass and leave some space for further attachments. Next, tell students to prepare the kiln shelf with kiln shelf wash, applying three layers evenly. Set the kiln shelf for "glass fuse firing" and wait for it to cool down. Equipment needed consists of glass cutter, cutting fluid, pliers, kiln wash and safety goggles.

    Plate Lesson

    • This lesson involves the creation of a fused glass plate. Give each student a piece of Murano Spirit and a variety of glass color strips. Ask students to cut a 10-inch square from their Murano Spirit and then to cut the colored strips for the top layer of the plate depending on the required dimensions. Ask them to arrange the layout of the color strips in a way that suits them. They should place the arranged color strips on the Murano Spirit base with a small amount of glue before fusing the glass and avoiding air bubbles. The lesson requires one piece of Murano Spirit and glass color strips.

    Bumble Bee Lesson

    • This lesson involves the creation of a fused glass bee. Using a permanent marker, ask students to draw their own bee's body on a sheet of yellow opal glass. After this, ask each one to draw the outline of a pair of wings on another sheet of clear glass. At cutting stations, ask that they cut around the marker on each sheet of glass until they are left with the shape of their bug's body and wings. Using pinpoints of glue, stick the body-shaped glass onto the wings. Tell students to cut some black strips and stick them onto their bee's body. Fuse the bee in the kiln. This lesson plan requires the use of a piece of yellow opal glass, a piece of clear glass and a number of black strips.

    Hair Clip Lesson

    • This lesson involves the creation of fused glass hair clips. Students should cut small squares out of a piece of fusible glass. Once this is done, ask them to place their pieces on a kiln shelf, positioning each piece sparsely and fusing. When fused, ensure students clean each piece carefully. After this, they should use appropriate adhesive to attach each piece of glass to its own "bobby pin." After adhesive is left to dry, students should be left with their own hair clips. This lesson requires a piece of glass, adhesive and bobby pins.
