How to Multiply With a Zero Exponent

An exponent other than zero is a number that tells you how many times to use a number as a factor of itself. A factor is a number you multiply. You write an exponent to the upper right of a number, or base, that you want to raise to a power, such as 2^3. The exponent 0 has a different meaning than other, higher-numbered exponents because a 0 exponent makes the base a result of 1. You need to calculate a base with a zero exponent before performing other operations on an expression.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine a number that you want to multiply by a base with a zero exponent. For the following example, use the expression 24y^0.

    • 2

Raise the base to the zero exponent. In the example, raise the base of y to the power of 0, which equals 1. This leaves 24(1) in the expression.

    • 3

Multiply the remaining numbers in the expression. In the example, multiply 24 by 1, which equals 24. This is the result of a number multiplied by a base with a zero exponent.
