How to Multiply Exponential Terms

An exponential term is a mathematical figure that raises a value by a certain power. For instance, if you have the number 2 raised by an exponential term of 3, you would have a total of 8, since 2 times 2 times 2 equals 8. Multiplying exponential terms is a common assignment in high school and college algebra and calculus classes. When you multiply exponential terms, you must follow certain rules regarding the manipulation of exponents.

Instructions

    • 1

Write down the multiplication sentence. For example, you might have x^3 * x^4.

    • 2

Add the exponents if the bases are alike. In this example, you would add 3 and 4 to get x^7.

    • 3

Avoid multiplying bases that are not alike. For example, although you can multiply x^3 * x^4, you cannot multiply x^3 * y^4.

    • 4

Multiply the exponents that lie inside and outside a set of parentheses that contains a single base. For example, if you have (b^2)^4, multiply the 2 and the 4 to get x^8.
