How to Make a Chemical Battery Using Clorox

Make a homemade battery using Clorox bleach and water. This battery will be powerful, but will last only up to one week if you don't refresh the water supply. Be careful to keep children and pets away from this experiment. If you are performing it with you children, explain to them that Clorox is extremely toxic, and never leave small children unsupervised around the bleach.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a glass with 8 oz. tap water.

    • 2

Add ¼ tsp. Clorox bleach to the tap water.

    • 3

Put a 1-inch wide copper pipe in the glass. The copper pipe should stick out of the glass several inches.

    • 4

Put a 1-inch wide aluminum bar into the water. The aluminum bar should be the same size as the copper pipe.

    • 5

Wrap electrical wires around the top of the aluminum pipe and the copper pipe.

    • 6

Wrap the wires around each other. Attach them to a volt meter to determine how many volts your battery is generating. You should generate about 1.5 volts. You will generate more power with more bleach, but the metals will corrode faster.
