How to Make a Rectanglar Pyramid

Pyramids are shapes that have a base and triangular faces that combine at a single vertex. Rectangular pyramids are three-dimensional shapes that have a base in the shape of a rectangle and are used in geometry to teach the concepts of volume, capacity and surface area. The most popular rectangular pyramids are the Great Pyramids of Egypt.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a net for a rectangular pyramid. A net is a template that when cut out can be folded to make a three-dimensional shape.

    • 2

Draw a rectangle for the base of your rectangular pyramid. A rectangle is a two-dimensional shape that has four sides and four right angles, with two sets of parallel lines.

    • 3

Draw two pairs of congruent triangles coming off the sides of the rectangular base. The triangles opposite each other should be the exact same size and the exact same shape. All four triangles should be drawn to the same height so that they connect at a single vertex. The widths of the triangles should be equivalent to the side length of the triangle they are on. Creating triangles in this manner will ensure there are no gaps in your net.

    • 4

Cut out the net for your rectangular pyramid and fold the triangles up so that they connect at a single vertex, creating the point of the pyramid.

    • 5

Tape the edges where two triangles touch to hold your net together.
