NYSED Curriculum Objectives

The New York State Education Department states that its mission is "to raise the knowledge, skill, and opportunity of all the people in New York." To achieve this goal, NYSED has set standards for seven different areas of study. These standards are quite thorough and outline specific objectives for each subject.
  1. The Arts

    • The first set of standards relate to the arts. These objectives state that students will take part in an artistic performance and effectively utilize art-related materials in doing so. In addition, students will learn to analyze a work of art and respond to "cultural" contributions of the arts.

    Career Development and Occupational Studies

    • The second area of study aims for students to explore careers and connect their education to job-related skills. The objectives of this area are for students to explore career options, acquire skills that are relevant to the workplace, and ultimately choose a career major that allows them to work toward a successful career in the future.

    English Language Arts

    • Students will understand information through listening, speaking, reading and writing. In addition, other objectives state that students will read, listen, and respond to literary texts while, in a subsequent objective, they will analyze and evaluate texts. Lastly, students are expected to use language as a means of social interaction.

Health, Physical Education, and Family and Consumer Sciences

    • This subject is more broad in its focus. Objectives state that students will develop skills relating to physical fitness, learn to create a personal environment that is both safe and healthy, and understand how to manage the resources at their disposal.

    Languages Other Than English

    • The objectives for this area are relatively straightforward. Students will learn and use a language other than English and, through studying language, also understand different cultures.

    Mathematics, Science and Technology

    • This is a much broader area of study. Students will understand both mathematical and scientific principles. Also included in this subject are objectives relating to effectively using technology. There is also an interdisciplinary component, requiring students to make connections among not only math, science and technology, but also to real-world problems.

    Social Studies

    • This last area of study is also relatively broad, requiring students to be familiar with not only the history of the United States but also major world events. In addition, objectives state that students will understand geography, economics and governments from around the world.
