Introduce your students to Roald Dahl, the author of the book "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." Have them brainstorm questions that they would want to ask Dahl if he were still alive. Then, using the Smartboard, take students to the Roald Dahl website and play audio clips of interviews with the author. While there, you can also show them the Roald Dahl photo album, biography and trivia quiz.
Divide students into five groups. Randomly assign each group one of the golden ticket winners. Have them create a series of trivia questions about that character from the book. Tell them to provide correct answers and rank the questions from 1 to 5 in difficulty, with 1 being the easiest. Use the Smartboard to create a "Jeopardy"-style board and have the whole class play the game.
Have students find every flavor or ingredient mentioned in the book and create a list with the Smartboard as they call out the flavors. Then have students create new chocolate bar varieties using combinations of the ingredients and flavors mentioned. Each time a flavor or ingredient is used, cross it off the list. Using a different-color pen, list the new candy bar varieties the students come up with. Then assign each student one of the new candy bars and have them make a poster advertising the new creation.
Help introduce students to the concepts of story maps and mind mapping. For story maps, prepare an outline on the Smartboard and project it onto the screen. Have students take turns coming up and filling out the different graphic elements of the story map. For a mind mapping exercise, write "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" in colorful letters in the center of the screen. Have each child come up and draw something leading off the title. Encourage them to write words, draw pictures and take the map in new directions.
