Marine Animals That Live Deep in the Ocean

The ocean is deep enough in some areas where there is little or no sunlight. The animals living in these depths have evolved physical features allowing them to survive. Some animals have the ability to produce their own light and others have larger than normal teeth and fins.
  1. Frilled Shark

    • The frilled shark is also known as the frill shark. This creature lives in the ocean to depths of 660 feet, and grows to approximately 5 feet. Because of its long thin body it's often mistaken for an eel. Its diet consists mainly of cuttlefish, octopus and squid. The shark attacks and bites its prey with over 300 teeth. The teeth are arranged in 25 rows in the shark's mouth.

    Vampire Squid

    • The vampire squid can live from 1,800 to 3,500 feet below the ocean's surface. It grows to just 6 inches in length, and the adult female is slightly larger than the male. The vampire squid is bioluminescent meaning it has photophores, light-emitting organs, that cover the creature's body. The squid can illuminate itself and expel glowing mucus as a defense against predators.

    Viperfish

    • The viperfish, also known as Sloan's fangfish, is found in depths ranging from 250 to 5,000 feet. In more tropical areas, due to the heat, it's found in depths up to 9,000 feet. This fish grows to approximately 12 inches in length. It can't close its mouth due to the large, fang-like teeth. The long dorsal fin is equipped with a photophore. The viperfish uses this bioluminescent organ to attract prey and possible mates.

    Gulper Eel

    • The gulper eel is also known as the pelican eel. The name reflects the creatures large mouth and pouch-like bottom jaw. This creature grows 3 to 6 feet long, and it can survive in depths up to 6,000 feet. Due to its small teeth, the gulper eel feeds mainly on crustaceans and cephalopods, scooping them into its large jaw. The pelican eel is found globally in tropical and temperate waters.
