Read the first paragraph on the page.
Highlight any important facts within that paragraph using a highlighter marker. Important facts include anything that you find personally significant or that you feel you may need to recall in the future for personal use, in a class discussion or on a test.
Move the next paragraph and repeat the same procedure. Do this until you have read the entire page.
Re-read only the highlighted sections of your text.
Write brief notes on the upper, lower or side margins of the page. Use these notes to summarize the highlighted sections. Many students favor writing notes in phrase form, as you don't need complete sentences to remember facts. Writing complete sentences may take up too much time and space.
Add symbols to your marginal summary notes if needed. For instance, if you come across something that you don't understand and want to investigate, add a question mark to the note. If you notate something that you know will be extremely important for a test, add a star or asterisk.
