5th Grade Cell Experiments

As students near middle school age, science lessons will change from general information about plants, animals and the environment to more focused lessons on the structure of human life, particularly in regards to cells. Engage students in experiments to help them understand the structure and the purpose of these building blocks of life.
  1. Cell Models

    • Explain the different structures located inside of the cell and then require the students to make models of the cell with its structures. One idea is to have the students make the cytoplasm out of Jello with fruits and candies acting as the structures. Have all students follow this model or allow some creative freedom by permitting an array of materials, such as Styrofoam balls and clay. Require all students to label the parts of the cell.

    Microscope

    • Introduce students to the proper way to use microscopes by having them look at different types of cells. After studying the differences amongst plant, animal and human cells, distribute a slide with cells from each of these types of beings. However, do not tell the students which is which. Through observation of the cells, have them guess which cell belongs to which type of organisms. Have the students create a chart where they list the differences they see amongst the cells.

    Field Trips

    • Instead of having the students work in the school lab, bring them to a location, such as Cold Spring Harbor DNA Learning Center, or a trip to the University of Rochester Medical Center where they can learn more about different types of cells. Call a local lab or college in your area to see if it has programs for students. The students will engage in cell lab experiments with trained professionals in the field.

    Online Labs

    • Not all schools are equipped with the necessary material to allow all students to engage in a cell lab. Therefore, allow students in such circumstances to watch cell lab videos together so that they can still see the applications of cell information. One example is the video on how to prepare animal and plant cell slides. When they are done watching the video, give them a worksheet to check that they understood the lab.
