Ideas for P.E. Night for Parents & Students

A PE night gives parents the chance to hang out with their kids at school outside of regular hours. By bringing them together after school, the families will have fun and be active, and students will be able to show the school off to their parents and younger siblings. To make the night a success, plan events that will be accessible for a wide range of abilities.
  1. Parents vs. Students

    • For a PE night event that will provide plenty of entertainment, set up a parents versus students competition. Choose a game that is easy for everyone and doesn't require a lot of skill, like dodgeball. Set up the play space and put parents on one side and students on the other; the game will allow friendly and fun competition and provide plenty of laughs for everyone involved. Be sure to have someone photographing the event to put the photos on the school website afterward.

    Stations

    • To keep your PE night organized, set up stations with different activities. Choose each station based on the age of the students: basketball shooting, hula hooping or volleyball, for example. Parents and kids can rotate through each station during the evening or float between them. To pump up the event, hire a DJ to play music and use the change in songs or styles to signal a station change. Keep things orderly by blocking each area off visually with ropes or even tape on the floor.

    Snacks

    • Keep your PE night guests energized by providing snacks for parents and children. Choose healthy options to support the active theme of the evening. Consider bottled water, cut fruit, small sandwiches or vegetables. Put them out in an area outside of the gym so that the food will not get all over the floor. You can also give out school water bottles as favors, and guests can use them as refillable, eco-friendly drink holders.

    Community

    • To bring people into your school family, open the PE night to the community. You can invite the entire town to participate or go further by getting sponsorship and adding value. Ask local businesses to donate snacks or gift items. You can also solicit local businesses to provide free, health-related services like chiropractic adjustments, screenings or running gait analyses. The extras will appeal to parents and kids will be able to bring their friends from other schools.
