How to Calculate Point Slope Prediction

A line is defined as the set of points connecting any two separate points. There are many uses for graphing a line. Lines can be used to model every day phenomenon such as supply and demand. Lines can also be used to predict trends in the stock market. Lines are usually given in the form y = mx+b. However, a line can be plotted with just its slope and the coordinates of one point.

Instructions

    • 1

Plot the point given. For example, if the slope is given as 3/4, and a point (1,3) is given, plot the point (1,3). Do this by starting at (0,0). Then, go over one unit on the x-axis and go up three units on the y-axis. Darken this point with a pencil.

    • 2

Use the slope to plot the next point. The numerator of the slope is the rise, and the denominator of the slope is the run. In this example, the rise is three and the run is four. So, start at the point (1,3). Then, go up three units on the y-axis and over four units on the x-axis to reach the point (5,6). Darken this point with a pencil.

    • 3

Connect the points from Step 1 and Step 2 to create the line. This is the predicted line from the point and the slope.
