Instructional Activities for Second Grade Addition

Keeping the attention of second graders can be a difficult task, especially when teaching math. Turn your second grade addition lesson plan into a game that your students will retain and enjoy. By using visual, audio and timed drills, students are given options beyond the old method of flash cards alone. Hands-on lessons can help fight the battle of "math boredom." After all, it's all about memory retention.

Instructions

  1. Addition War

    • 1

Deal a deck of cards out evenly between two to four students. Make sure that every player has an even amount of cards. Instruct the students not to look at the cards.

    • 2

Count to three and have each student place two of their cards face up.

    • 3

Add the pair of cards together. Award the player with the highest summed pair the round.

    • 4

Remove the cards and add them to the winner's deck. Continue playing until one player has won all the cards in the deck or set a playing time limit if the game continues on to long. Count the cards that each player has at the end of the game. The player with the most cards wins.

    Candy Corn Bingo

    • 5

Draw a bingo grid on a sheet of paper using a marker. Mark the center square as a "free" spot. Photocopy enough bingo boards for each student.

    • 6

Write 24 simple addition facts on a separate piece of paper. Make copies for each child. Cut the addition facts out and glue them onto the bingo boards in random order.

    • 7

Pass out candy corn to each player. Begin play by having the caller announce an answer to one of the addition facts. Instruct the players to identify the correct addition fact that is true to the answer given.

    • 8

Place a candy corn on the correct addition fact. The first player to obtain and call out "bingo" is the winner.
