The Advantages of Expository Writing

In expository writing, the author gives information to his readers. This writing style's intent is to describe, explain and inform. Much of the reading and writing that we do in our daily lives -- especially writing done at work or school -- is expository. Examples of such writing are essays and memos. Several advantages arise from expository writing.
  1. Intellectual Growth

    • Expository writing allows us to learn and grow intellectually, as it plays a major role in education. Virtually every textbook that every student reads is written in an expository fashion. Worksheets that explain how to solve math problems have expository writing. Self-help books are a form of expository writing, as they explain to the reader how to improve their lives.

    Preparation

    • Expository writing helps prepare students for a career. Kids begin learning about expository writing in elementary school, when they write book reports. In high school, most papers and essays are expository to prepare for college, where expository writing happens in writing, business, science and history classes, among others. All of this expository writing during secondary and post-secondary education prepares students for the workforce, where expository writing is common. Learning how to read and write expository works is essential to success in most corporate settings.

    Everyday Instruction

    • Expository writing tells us how to do everyday things in and around our home. If you buy a new video game and want to learn how to play it, you read the instruction manual written in expository fashion. Cooking instructions, home improvement guides and gardening manuals are all forms of expository writing.

    Share Information

    • Expository writing enables us to describe things that happen in our lives or share information about events. Most articles found in the local newspaper feature expository writing. Even personal letters that we write can be expository writing if we are sharing information with someone else.
