Technology Activities for Systems of Inequalities

Students begin learning about equations with inequalities in middle school and learn to graph systems of inequalities in Algebra 1. Technology provides students with games and interactive lessons that help explain the concept of inequalities in more detail and give them practice with solving and graphing systems of inequalities. Teachers are also able to find online resources to use with SMARTboards or graphing calculators to help students develop these skills.
  1. Games

    • Online games are an entertaining way to help students learn about systems of equations and inequalities. Math-Play.com offers the Inequality Game in which students solve inequalities and word problems. When students get an incorrect answer, the game provides and explanation on how to find the correct answer and gives the student a chance to try again. SpeedMath-Inequalities from Jefferson Lab provides students with two equations and has students determine whether the first equation is greater than, less than or equal to the second.

    Online Lessons

    • Online lessons help students review techniques for solving systems of inequalities at home and frequently present the lesson in student-friendly and interactive ways. Coolmath offers lessons on solving inequalities and graphing inequalities. Lessons are broken down into steps and include pictures and color-coding to help students understand the concept. Included throughout the lesson are problems for students to try and interactive problem-solvers. Math Warehouse offers an interactive lesson on graphing inequalities where students are able to drag lines on a graph to see the changes in an equation.

    SMARTboard Activities

    • SMART Technologies, which produces SMARTboards, has created lessons based on inequalities for teachers to download and use. Lessons provide pre-created number lines and sample problems for teachers and students to solve. In addition to lessons for use in the SMART Notebook software, SMART technologies has created question sets to use with classroom clicker systems. Through the SMART Exchange, teachers are able to browse and download lessons on inequalities created by other teachers and submit their own ideas as well.

    Calculator Activities

    • Students are able to use graphing calculators to graph systems of inequalities. Texas Instruments, the creator of the popular graphing calculator models TI-83 and TI-84 Plus, offers a free application for download that makes graphing inequalities simpler on the TI-83. The application is preloaded on TI-84 calculators. To enter the equations into the calculator, students must first solve each equation for y. Once the equations are solved for y, press the "y=" button to enter the equations. Move the cursor to the backslash at the beginning of each equation and press enter until the greater than or less than sign appears. Hit the graph button to see a graph of the equations.
