How to Sculpt Copper

Sculpting with copper wire is an art technique making a resurgence. And for good reasons. It is an inexpensive medium to work with, yet allows the creation of airy, delicate sculptures. Copper's color properties make it a popular choice of artists. It can be chemically treated to turn green or blue. Leaving it outside in the elements achieves the same effect. The traditional copper color can be maintained by spraying the sculpture with a clear, protective coating such as polyurethane. Because the wire can be tricky to work with initially, creating a small sculpture is a good starting point.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin fueling the creative thought process by making line sketches on paper using a pencil. Consider some of the things you enjoy most as a source of inspiration, such as flowers or animals. Let your hand flow freely and abstractly on the paper surface.

    • 2

Lay several 12-inch-lengths of copper wire on a flat surface. Bend the end of each wire into a small circle to help prevent injury to the face or eyes from sharp wire ends.

    • 3

Begin looping, braiding, twisting and wrapping the wires, allowing inspiration to guide the design. Don't follow your line sketches exactly, since it takes away from the spontaneity of the sculpture. Work with the wire until the desired look is achieved, cutting and adding more wire lengths as needed.

    • 4

Attach a length of wire firmly to the bottom of the wire sculpture, leaving a 1-inch end of the wire pointing down. The 1-inch length attaches the sculpture to the base.

    • 5

Make the sculpture base by sanding a 4-by-4-inch wood block, using 120-grit sandpaper. Remove rough edges and splinters. Wipe off the dust residue with a lint-free cloth.

    • 6

Make a mark in the center on one side of the wood block, using a pencil. Drill a 1-inch deep hole at the mark using a drill bit appropriate to the wire size.

    • 7

Apply a clear drying glue to the base point of the sculpture. Insert it into the drilled hole on the wood block. Allow the glue to dry overnight.
