How Does Earth's Rotation Change the Seasons?

Earth's seasons are made possible because of earth's rotation, or its revolution, as it makes its 365-day journey about the sun in orbit, as well as earth's 23.5 degree tilt on its axis. Due to the planet's tilt, one pole tilts toward and then away from the sun in opposition to the other pole. In the Northern Hemisphere, people experience the winter season while those dwelling in the Southern Hemisphere experience the summer season.
  1. Winter

    • In the Northern Hemisphere, winter makes its approach when the North Pole tilts away from the sun. Meanwhile, the summer season starts in the Southern Hemisphere. Wintertime makes its debut in the Southern Hemisphere when the South Pole tilts further away from the sun. When one pole tilts closer toward the sun, the other pole tilts further away from the sun. This results in the differing seasons between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Those dwelling in the Northern Hemisphere have winter between December and February, while those living in the Southern Hemisphere experience winter between June and August.

    Summer

    • Trips to the beach and outdoor hobbies become more practical during the summer season. Depending on a person's location on earth, he may experience summer during June or in December. When the South Pole tilts toward the sun, the Southern Hemisphere experiences summer. If the North Pole tilts toward the sun, the Northern Hemisphere enters the summer season. In the Northern Hemisphere, summer occurs from June to August. In the Southern Hemisphere, summer occurs between December and February.

    Spring

    • Like fall, spring is one of earth's transition seasons between winter and summer. When it is spring in the Northern Hemisphere between the months of March and June, the North Pole begins to tilt toward the sun in preparation of summer. Meanwhile, the South Pole tilts further away from the sun. When it is spring in the Southern Hemisphere, the South Pole starts to tilt toward the sun while the North Pole starts to tilt further away from it. When it is spring in one hemisphere, it is fall in the other.

    Fall

    • The leaves on trees may turn colors like orange and red and fall from trees. Those experiencing fall may start to pull coats out of the closet after putting them away for the summer. When fall comes to the Northern Hemisphere, the North Pole tilts further away from the sun as winter approaches. In the Southern Hemisphere, the South Pole tilts further away from the sun during fall.
