Fun Way to Remember the Classification of Living Things

With more than 10 million different species of living things on the planet, organizing them all is a hassle. The classification of living things helps to break plants and animals into groups. There are seven classifications for living things: kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus and species. A fun way to remember these classifications is to create a mnemonic phrase that represents each classification.

Instructions

    • 1

Write down a simple mnemonic phrase that you can remember. If you’re a fan of Italian food, use “King Phillip Came Over For Good Spaghetti.” If you find weird animal behavior funny, use “Kangaroos Play Cellos, Orangutans Fiddle, Gorillas Sing.” You can also make up your own, as long as the first letter of each word begins with the letters K-P-C-O-F-G-S, respectively.

    • 2

Match each word in the mnemonic phrase with the relative classification. “K” stands for kingdom. “P” stands for phylum. “C” stands for class. “O” stands for order. “F” stands for family. “G” stands for genus. “S” stands for species.

    • 3

Repeat your mnemonic phrase and each classification until you have it memorized. Soon, remembering the classification of living things will be as simple as recalling your funny mnemonic phrase.
