A: 90-100
B: 80-89
C: 70-79
D: 60-69
F: 0-59
In addition to these letter grades, Georgia high schools also use the following symbols to indicate special circumstances:
E: Exempt (student is not required to take the course)
I: Incomplete (student has not completed all of the coursework)
P: Pass (student has met the minimum requirements for the course)
W: Withdraw (student has dropped the course)
Georgia high schools also calculate students' grade point averages (GPAs) based on the following point values:
A: 4.0 points
B: 3.0 points
C: 2.0 points
D: 1.0 point
F: 0 points
The GPA is calculated by dividing the total number of points earned by the total number of credits attempted. For example, a student who earns an A in one class, B in another, C in a third class, and D in a fourth class would have a GPA of 3.0.
Georgia high schools also use a weighted GPA system, which gives higher point values to grades earned in honors, advanced placement (AP), and international baccalaureate (IB) courses. The weighting system varies from school to school, but it is typically as follows:
Honors: 1.1 times the grade point value
AP: 1.2 times the grade point value
IB: 1.3 times the grade point value
The weighted GPA is calculated by multiplying the grade point value of each grade by the weight of the course. For example, a student who earns an A in an honors course would earn 4.4 points (4.0 x 1.1), while a student who earns an A in an AP course would earn 4.8 points (4.0 x 1.2).
The weighted GPA is used for a variety of purposes, including determining class rank and admission to college.
