The school was founded in 1689 by Anne Granville, Countess of Dorset, as a free school for girls from the parishes of St Martin-in-the-Fields and St Clement Danes. It was originally located near St Martin-in-the-Fields church, but moved to its current site in Camden in 1824.
In 1845, the school was granted a Royal Charter by Queen Victoria, which made it one of the first all-girls schools in England to receive such an honour. This also meant that the school was able to charge fees, which helped to improve its financial situation.
In the 20th century, the school continued to grow and develop. It became one of the first girls' schools to offer A-level courses, and in 1970 it became fully co-educational. However, in 2001 the school reverted back to being an all-girls school.
Today, St Martin-in-the-Fields High School for Girls is a highly regarded school with an excellent reputation. It offers a wide range of academic and extra-curricular opportunities for its students, and is known for its strong sense of community.
