Are High School Athletics a right or privilege?

High school athletics are a privilege, not a right.

While participation can offer numerous benefits, there's no legal or inherent right to participate in them. Schools and governing bodies set eligibility rules and requirements, which can include things like grades, attendance, and adherence to school rules. These requirements mean participation can be revoked for failing to meet those standards. A right, by contrast, is something guaranteed by law, regardless of individual circumstances or merit.
