Activities for PE Class

Gym class is a venue for kids to properly develop their bodies by building muscle through exercise, instilling physically active habits and pushing themselves in competition. Also, physical education (PE) isn't just about exercise, it can teach kids how to play sports, an important aspect of American culture. PE can also provide valuable lessons by creating games that teach kids motor skills, such as balance, agility, hand-eye coordination and reflexes.
  1. Team Champ Basketball

    • Team Champ Basketball instills the fundamentals of basketball, such as shooting and passing. The teacher splits up the class into an even number of teams with three to four students in a team. Two teams play against each other at one designated basket. Each team lines up on opposites sides with a few feet between each player. Only one player from each team has the ball at once -- the shooter. The shooter from each team meets at the free throw or three-point line to touch balls, signifying the start of play. Each person shoots and then passes their team's ball to the next player. The last shooter goes to the end of the line and waits to get the ball passed to them again to shoot for the team. No person gets to shoot more than anyone else and the total number of baskets scored by each team, decides the winner of the game.

    Quick Serve Tennis

    • Quick Serve Tennis is a useful introduction to tennis so students can learn the basics and enjoy a quick pace of play. Unlike the standard tennis, the quick serve version consists of playing a doubles format with four to five tennis balls sitting in front of each teams' net. The idea is to play tennis without having to chase after the ball. After a point is won, the winning team gets to serve and they sprint up to the net and grab a ball to use, forgetting about the last ball. If the serving team wins the volley, they win a point. If the receiving team wins the volley, they do not receive a point -- they win the next serve.

    Switch Soccer

    • Switch Soccer is basically having the students play keep away with a soccer ball. However, after the students play for a few minutes, getting the gist, the teacher institutes the scoring aspect. There two teams stay within one side of a soccer field, trying to keep control of the ball. Then, the teacher takes a second ball and places it on the opposite side of the field. Scoring in this game consists of kicking the current ball into the second ball, the team that accomplishes this feat scores a point. The game continues and the teacher places the "scoring" ball on the other side of the field.

    Badminton Partner Singles

    • Badminton Partner Singles allows students to enjoy the team aspect of badminton while working on their individual skills. The game is set up as four players per court with each student having one teammate. However, the game is not played as doubles -- the other teammate watches from the sidelines while the playing teammate participates. Then, each teammate switches while providing feedback to each other.
