Theatre West is dedicated to enriching lives through the celebration and presentation of performing arts. Its predecessor, Patio Playhouse, was founded by Charles and Virginia Webb in 1971. The Webbs opened Patio Playhouse in their backyard, and through their talent, perseverance and dedication, the group grew to a membership of over 700 patrons and 200 volunteers. In 2004, Patio Playhouse moved from its charming garden setting to a historic church located at 311 1st Street. The name of the company was then officially changed to Theatre West, and the organization grew to be one of the top five community theatres in all of California.
In 2014, Theatre West signed a 20-year agreement to lease the historic Price Center in San Marcos. With over 1300 seats, the move will allow Theatre West to continue its mission of providing excellent live theatre and music for years to come. Theatre West will present four mainstage musicals and plays per year, as well as numerous musical concerts and youth theatre productions.
Education
In 2009, Theatre West's Board of Directors decided to focus on its educational and community outreach programs, and with that, the Theatre Conservatory of San Marcos was founded. Through the Conservatory, students of all ages can explore their passion for the arts year-round. The Conservatory offers a variety of classes, workshops and summer camps in acting, dance, voice and production, as well as training in specialized topics like audition techniques, improvisation, and Shakespeare.
Community Outreach
Theatre West continues its commitment to the San Marcos community by offering numerous programs that give back. With the help of our generous community partners, programs like "Tickets for Teachers," "Community Night" and "Arts for All" aim to make our performances accessible to everyone, regardless of socioeconomic background. Theatre West also regularly donates thousands of dollars to a variety of local charities, including the Boys and Girls Club of San Marcos, the Rotary Club of San Marcos, and the Interfaith Community Services Food Pantry.
Theatre West welcomes people from all walks of life. We are committed to fostering artistic excellence, embracing inclusiveness and diversity, and building strong relationships with our community.
