Where does the word English come from?

The word "English" comes from the Old High German word "Angul", which referred to the Angles, a Germanic tribe who settled in England in the 5th and 6th centuries AD. The term "Angul" is thought to have derived from the Proto-Germanic word "Angli", meaning "narrow" or "confined", potentially referring to the Angles' original homeland in a narrow strip of land between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. Over time, the term "Angul" came to be used to refer to all the inhabitants of England, and eventually evolved into the modern word "English."
