The word "tuxedo" comes from the name of the Tuxedo Park, a private club in New York City. In 1886, a member of the club named Griswold Lorillard created a new type of formal evening wear that was shorter and less formal than the traditional tailcoat. He named the new garment after the club, and the name "tuxedo" has been used ever since.
