On the other hand, haiku was a form of poetry that emerged in Japan during the Edo period (1603-1868). It was characterized by its brevity and its focus on nature and the everyday life of the common people. As such, the subjects of haiku were often simple things like the changing of the seasons, the beauty of a flower, or the sound of a bird.
Of course, there were also some exceptions to these general trends. Some medieval European poetry did deal with secular topics, and some haiku did include religious themes. However, the overall difference in subjects between medieval European poetry and haiku is still clear.
