Why do the servants think that man in laboratory is not Jekyll?

In Robert Louis Stevenson's novella titled “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”, the servants never believed the person hiding in Dr. Jekyll's mansion as Mr. Hyde as the description does not align with it.
