Wiesel's father, Shlomo: A wise and gentle man who loves his family deeply. Shlomo is a pillar of strength for Eliezer throughout their time in the camps, but he eventually succumbs to starvation and illness.
Moishe the Beadle: A pious and learned Jew who is Eliezer's mentor in Sighet. Moishe is deported to Auschwitz before Eliezer, and he returns a changed man, haunted by what he has seen.
Madame Schachter: A woman who is transported with Eliezer and his family to Auschwitz. She becomes increasingly hysterical as the train journey continues, and she eventually loses her mind and dies.
Juliek: A young boy who is befriended by Eliezer in Auschwitz. Juliek is a kind and compassionate person, but he is also deeply traumatized by his experiences in the camp. He eventually dies of dysentery.
Chlomo: A strong and resourceful young man who is also transported to Auschwitz with Eliezer. Chlomo helps Eliezer to survive in the camp, but he is eventually killed in a bombing raid.
Buna: A sub-camp of Auschwitz where Eliezer and his father are sent to work. Buna is a hellish place, where the prisoners are forced to work long hours in grueling conditions. Many of the prisoners die from starvation, illness, or exhaustion.
Gleiwitz: Another sub-camp of Auschwitz where Eliezer is sent to work. Gleiwitz is a smaller camp than Buna, but it is just as deadly. The prisoners are forced to work in a coal mine, and many of them die from accidents, starvation, or illness.
Auschwitz: The main concentration camp where Eliezer and his father are imprisoned. Auschwitz is the largest Nazi concentration camp, and it is where millions of Jews and other prisoners were murdered. The camp is a place of unimaginable suffering, where the prisoners are subjected to starvation, torture, and death.
