What means the right to rule was god given?

Divine right or the divine right of kings is a political and religious doctrine of royal and political legitimacy. It asserts that a monarch's political power is derived from the will of God, and that God grants the monarch the right to rule.

The concept of divine right was present in ancient Egypt and the Near East, and was adopted and adapted by Christian theologians and monarchs in Europe and elsewhere. In the medieval and early modern periods, monarchs who embraced the doctrine would often claim to be God's anointed on Earth, and would be crowned with religious rituals and ceremonies.

The doctrine of divine right was used to justify monarchies and to suppress political dissent, as it implied that any challenge to the monarch's authority was a challenge to God's will. It also formed the basis for the belief that the king was above the law, and that he was not subject to the same legal constraints as his subjects.

The concept of divine right continued to be influential until the rise of modern democracy, and it was only fully rejected with the French Revolution in 1789. However, it left a lasting legacy in many modern political systems, such as the idea of the "royal prerogative", which gives monarchs certain powers and privileges that are not shared by their subjects.
