Fourth Grade Sight Word Activities

Sight words help students develop a strong foundation for reading and understanding texts. These words are the 200 to 250 most common words that appear in basic texts. Once students absorb the meanings of these sight words, they can read texts more efficiently. Primarily, elementary-level reading programs focus on sight words in grades K through 3, but sight word instruction doesn't end when 4th grade begins. 4th-grade lesson plans continue to teach sight words through remedial reviews and a more advanced list learned through a number of sight word activities.
  1. Flash Cards

    • To learn new 4th-grade level sight words and how to identify them in a sentence, make a set of flashcards for the new list of sight words. Alternatively, have the students make them and use each other's to study and learn with. This can help to reinforce the concept and force them to think independently. Write the sight word on one side and a sentence containing the sight word on the opposite side, with the sight word highlighted.

    Word searches

    • Make a word search containing at least ten new sight words per search, or have the students make their own word searches and exchange them with each other. To make a word search, take a piece of graph paper and write out the sight words diagonally, horizontally, and vertically, one letter per square. Fill in the space around the words with a jumble of letters to form a rectangular grid of letters.

    Fill In the Blank

    • Make a set of worksheets with a series of sentences containing a 4th-grade level sight word. Then, take the sight word out of each sentence and leave a blank space to mark the placement of the missing sight word. When you're done, create a vocabulary list of the sight words for students and add it to the worksheet. Have the students fill in the blank for each sentence from the list of sight words provided.

    Spelling Tic-Tac-Toe

    • This activity emphasizes how to spell 4th-grade level sight words correctly. Students work in pairs to play a game of tic-tac-toe, on paper. The twist to the game is that each student must be able to spell a sight word correctly before they can mark an "X" or an "O" in the next space on their turn. Have the opposing player draw the word to be spelled from a deck of cards with the sight words written on them.
