Encourage fifth graders to practice their dictionary skills on the 100th day of school by searching the dictionary under each of the letters H, U, N, D, R, E and D, finding the 100th word. Challenge the kids to use each word in a sentence or combine them all to create a silly sentence.
Break the class into equal teams and have them find as many words as possible using the letters found in the phrase, One Hundred School Days.
Why not celebrate the 100th day of school with a variety of hundred second challenges? Let children compete to see who can write their name the most times or who can stay quiet or not move for 100 seconds. How many animals or countries can the class name or who can do the most sit ups, push ups or jumping jacks in 100 seconds?
Take a trip back in time and look at how things were one 100 years ago. Have children research the types of clothing, music and jobs that were popular in that era. Were schools the same as they are today? Discuss with the class how old they will be 100 years from now. Compare the past trends with those of the future. What do the children think things will be like 100 years from now? Children can also dress up in costumes portraying life as it was 100 years ago or even how they think they will look when they are 100 years old.
Challenge your class of fifth graders to think up at least one 100 ways to make the number 100 using addition, subtraction, multiplication or division. For example, they may find it easy to say 50 + 50 = 100 but what are other ways to create this number? Offer a special prize to the first to find 100 ways to represent this number or to everyone who can complete the task.
