Read a Greek myth in class together. Discuss the myth's storyline, characters and the moral of the story. Ask the students to choose the most important moments of the story and write them down on the board. Break the students up into groups of two. Have each group choose one of the important moments in the story and create a picture to signify that moment on a piece of paper. Help students decide what to draw to best depict their moment in the story. Use colored pencils to draw and color the pictures. When all the pictures are done, join them together to create a class Greek mythology storybook.
Read stories about different Greek mythological characters. Have each student choose their favorite Greek character. Draw six circles of the same size on a large piece of paper. Inside each circle, draw a square whose corners touch the edges of the circle. Tell the children to draw and color images of their favorite Greek character inside each square. They can draw portraits of the character, scenes from the character's life and the character's name. Cut the circles out and fold each of the square line edges upward. Glue the edges of each circle cube to the others with the pictures facing outward to create your Greek character cube.
Greek story vases mimic the ancient Grecian pottery that depicts scenes from Greek mythology. Have students sketch one or two scenes from their favorite myth on a piece of paper. Emphasize the use of clear bold lines with sparing details. Help students gently carve their sketches into Styrofoam cups using pencils. Smudge the inside of the figures with black pastel and tissue. Smudge the outside of the cups with brick red pastel and tissue paper. The indented lines will be white while the rest of the cup is colored. Encourage students to write a short paragraph describing the images on their story vase.
The Greeks are renowned for being some of the first creators of theater. Put up class plays depicting the Greek myths. Break the students up into groups of three or four. Have each group read and choose their favorite Greek myth. Help each group decide on characters to play and a clear event that happens in the myth to stage. Use fabric, construction paper, glue, yarn and markers to create simple costumes for the plays. Give each group an allotted time and space to rehearse their Greek plays. At the end of the class gather all the students and take turns watching everyone's piece.
