Math Activity for Black History Month

The month of February is celebrated as Black History Month. This annual commemoration is meant to honor cultural contributions that have been made by African-Americans. Teaching black history does not have to be limited to social studies class -- it can be integrated into all subjects, including math.
  1. Statistics

    • Teach statistics using numbers that pertain to African-Americans. The federal Bureau of Labor Statistics (see Resources) gives many figures that relate to African-Americans in the work force. Math lessons can teach how to read these statistics. Much of this research is presented in graph form. Teach your students how to read these graphs, which include bar graphs, pie graphs and line graphs.

    Inventions and Time Lines

    • African-Americans are responsible for many inventions in U.S. history. The air conditioning unit, bicycle frame and cellular phone are all inventions of African-Americans. In math class, have students create a time line to show when these and other products were invented. The time line should have dates equally distributed across its length. Have students decide what the intervals of the time line should be.

    Worksheets

    • Many resources are available to create math worksheets that are themed for Black History Month. Examples include puzzles that use important African-American people's names as the answers or terms that pertain to African-American history. For example, math questions can have answers that indicate certain letters. Once the answers are all correct, the letters may spell out a historical name (see Resources).

    Biography

    • Though a biography is not typically thought of as a math lesson, if the biography focuses on numbers, dates or other math terms, it can be made into a lesson. For example, Jesse Owens (see Resources) was an African-American track star. A math lesson can be created by writing about his race times and the events that he ran. It can even go one step further and teach conversion by converting his times for events into all seconds or converting the yards that he raced to miles or feet.
