Easy to Do Science Projects About Light

Scientific concepts about light can be taught by parents or teachers without a lot of cost, and the experiments are easy to do. Whether you are using a light bulb or the sun, there are many things children can learn about light with a few simple items and basic directions.
  1. Bending Light

    • Bend light using a pencil, a drinking glass and some water. Fill the drinking glass half full with water. Place a pencil in the glass. Draw a line through the center of the paper. Observe the pencil and draw a picture of what you see. Fill the glass all the way to the top. Observe the pencil again. Draw any changes you see in the pencil. The light will be bent when it moves through the transparent glass and the transparent water.

    Sun-Sensitive Paper

    • Fix a pan of water. Take sun-sensitive paper and lay it out in the sun. Place an object on the paper and leave it for two minutes. Remove the paper and place it in the water bath for a couple of minutes. Remove the paper from the water and let it dry. The sun will have faded all of the paper that was not covered by the item. A picture of the object will remain. Repeat the experiment with different kinds of light bulbs, including UV lights, and compare the results.

    Heat Absorption

    • Take two identical clear glasses. Cover one glass with white construction paper. Cover the second glass with black construction paper. Hold the papers on with rubber bands. Fill the two cups with equal amounts of room temperature water. Leave them in a sunny place for at least two hours. Put a thermometer in each glass and discover which one has a higher temperature.

    Pinhole Camera

    • Place greaseproof paper over one end of a toilet paper roll and hold it on tightly with a rubber band. Cut a square of aluminum paper and place it over the other end of the toilet paper roll. Hold the aluminum foil on tightly with a rubber band. Use a stick pin to put a small hole in the center of the aluminum foil. Situate the toilet paper roll so a bright light faces the aluminum foil. An upside down image should appear on the greaseproof paper.
