What Supplies Will My Child Need for First Grade?

The family of a first grader usually receives a supply list from the child's school indicating what kinds of materials the child will need. There might also be a "wish list" -- a list of supplies that the teacher would like to have for her classroom. If you don't get a supply list, you can still prepare your first grader with the things she'll need.
  1. Writing and Drawing

    • First graders write with wooden pencils.

First graders write with pencils and they draw with colored pencils, markers or crayons. Pencils come with a small eraser on the tip, but this isn't usually enough -- she'll need a separate eraser. Give your child a pencil box or zipper pouch to put these materials in and check with her throughout the year to see if dried up markers or broken crayons need to be replaced.

    Cutting and Pasting

    • Your child will need glue or glue sticks for art.

Your first grader will need a small, blunt-nosed pair of scissors and a bottle of glue or glue sticks. He will use these materials for making art projects.

    Folders and Notebooks

    • Give your child at least one folder and notebook where she can put or write down homework, worksheets, permission slips or notes from the teacher.

    Backpack and Lunch Bag

    • It's important that your child have a backpack. He'll need to carry materials, homework, books and notes to and from school each day. The backpack should have a zipper so that it stays closed. If your child brings lunch to school each day, give her a reusable lunch bag or lunch box -- an insulated one will keep hot foods warm and cold foods cold.

    For the Classroom

    • Send supplies that are shared with the class.

First graders are sometimes asked to bring a box of resealable plastic bags, a roll of paper towels, a box of baby wipes and a box of facial tissue. These items are shared by the class.
