First graders write with pencils and they draw with colored pencils, markers or crayons. Pencils come with a small eraser on the tip, but this isn't usually enough -- she'll need a separate eraser. Give your child a pencil box or zipper pouch to put these materials in and check with her throughout the year to see if dried up markers or broken crayons need to be replaced.
Your first grader will need a small, blunt-nosed pair of scissors and a bottle of glue or glue sticks. He will use these materials for making art projects.
Give your child at least one folder and notebook where she can put or write down homework, worksheets, permission slips or notes from the teacher.
It's important that your child have a backpack. He'll need to carry materials, homework, books and notes to and from school each day. The backpack should have a zipper so that it stays closed. If your child brings lunch to school each day, give her a reusable lunch bag or lunch box -- an insulated one will keep hot foods warm and cold foods cold.
First graders are sometimes asked to bring a box of resealable plastic bags, a roll of paper towels, a box of baby wipes and a box of facial tissue. These items are shared by the class.
