Suggested Summer Reading List for First Grade

Encouraging the love of reading is important to all children but especially for

first-graders when they are just learning to read. Creating a summer reading list for your child will involve allowing the child to select what he is interested in. Select 15 books to include in the options presented to the child. Only give the child options of books that are on his reading level.
  1. Classic Favorites

    • Many children's books have been around for years and are still loved by first-graders. "The Berenstain Bears" books written by Stan and Jan Berenstain offer readers a look into the life of the bears. The first Berenstain Bear book was published in 1962. Dr. Seuss by Theodor Seuss Geisel is also a classic favorite of first graders. There are 44 different Dr. Seuss books to choose from that were written in the 1950s. Another classic author is Eric Carle, who wrote "The Very Hungry Catepillar", "Pancakes,Pancakes", and "The Grouchy Ladybug." Eric Carle began publishing his books in the late 1960s and is still publishing new books.

    Series Books

    • Children's book authors create a series of books that are read in order and encourage the reader to be excited for the next book. The Magic Tree House series written by Mary Pope Osbourne introduces the readers to history information as well as exciting adventures. Jack and Annie find a tree house near their home that transports them to different times in history. The First-Graders from Mars series written by Shana Corey explores first grade with a Martian named Horus. Horus is surprised to find that in first grade there is not much play time and nap time.

    Animal Books

    • "Mercy Watson" mystery series written by Kate DiCamillo transports the readers on funny adventures with a pig named Mercy Watson. Explore the exciting adventures of Mercy Watson as she solves problems. How to Clean a Hippopotamus by Robin Page discusses one of the mysteries of nature, animal symbiosis. This is a graphic book that delights children with gore, so it isn't for the squeamish. "If You Take a Mouse to School" by Laura Numeroff is a fun story about what a mouse would do at school.

    Fantasy Books

    • "How I Became a Pirate" written by Melinda Long is a sea adventure about life as a pirate. Jeremy Jacobs the main character who becomes a pirate and realizes that things are very different as a pirate. "When the Library Lights Go Out" by Megan McDonald explores the life of a lion, rabbit and a hermit crab in the library after closing. Your first-grader will enjoy the flight through fantasy in these special books.
