Separate the children into five groups and give each group a poster. Distribute the materials (construction paper, scissors, glue and markers) evenly to each of of the groups.
Instruct the first group to draw, decorate and cut out pictures of the people who initiated the events of the Salem Witch Trials. They are: Abigail Williams, Betty Parris, Ann Putnam, Elizabeth Hubbard and Tituba. The children should have freedom to draw the figure however they wish, but each picture should be labeled with the name of the person it represents.
Instruct the second group to draw, decorate and cut out pictures of the first people who were accused of witchcraft and others who were involved. They are: Sarah Good, Sarah Osbourne, Martha Corey, and Samuel Parris.
Instruct the third group to draw, decorate and cut out pictures of the people who were accused of witchcraft after the first group, the reverends and judges, and witnesses who oversaw the case. They are: Dorothy Good, Rebecca Nurse, Rachel Clinton, Sarah Cloyce, Elizabeth Proctor and John Hathorne.
Instruct the fourth group to draw, decorate and cut out pictures of the people who were next to be accused . They are: Abigail Hobbs, Bridget Bishop, Mary Warren, George Burroughs, Giles Corey and George Jacobs Sr.
Instruct the fifth group to draw, decorate and cut out pictures of the people who were primarily involved in the events of the Salem Witch Trials. They are: Capt. John Alden, Sarah Wildes, Deliverance Hobbs, John Willard, Alice Parker and John Richards.
Assign a character to each one of the children in each group or have them pick their own characters. Some children may have more than one character, depending on how many children you are teaching.
Begin with the first group. Abigail Williams, Betty Parris, Ann Putnam and Elizabeth Hubbard were Puritan children who were playing fortune telling games and listening to the stories of Tituba, a slave. Soon after, they displayed strange behavior and were thought to be afflicted by witchcraft. Tell the children to hold up the figures as you mention the names.
Continue with the second group. The girls accused Tituba, Sarah Good, Sarah Osbourne and Martha Corey of bewitching them. Samuel Parris was the minister of Salem who was consulted. He was also the uncle of Abigail Williams. Each time a character's name is mentioned, the children should hold up the character. Sarah Good, Sarah Osbourne and Martha Corey were found guilty of witchcraft.
Move on to the third group. Dorothy Good, Rebecca Nurse, Rachel Clinton, Sarah Cloyce and Elizabeth Proctor were the next to be accused. John Hathorne was the magistrate in charge of trying the accused witches. All were found guilty of witchcraft.
Instruct the fourth group to hold up pictures as you explain the events. Abigail Hobbs, Bridget Bishop, Mary Warren, George Burroughs, Giles Corey and George Jacobs Sr. were the next to be accused and tried. All of these people were also found guilty of witchcraft.
Instruct the fifth group to hold up their characters as you explain the last events. Capt. John Alden, Sarah Wildes, Deliverance Hobbs, John Willard, Alice Parker were all accused of witchcraft. John Richards was the judge who tried the case.
